Program
The scientific programme covers twelve thematic sessions, keynote lectures and a social programme.
Sessions
The scientific programme is organised around the following sessions:
Microbial time series and temporal dynamics
This session covers all aspects of short- and long-term temporal dynamics in the abundance, diversity, composition, and activity of aquatic microbial communities.
Spatial distribution, from the µm scale to global biogeography
This session invites abstracts on the spatial distribution of aquatic microbes, from microscale patterns to basin- and continental- and global-scale biogeography.
Microbial functions and biogeochemical cycles
This session explores how metabolic activities of aquatic microbes shape major biogeochemical cycles, including those of carbon, nitrogen, phosphorus, vitamins, and other essential micronutrients and elements.
Microbes as sentinels of environmental change
This session welcomes studies using aquatic microbes to detect, track, and understand environmental change, including responses to climate change, pollution, and other natural and anthropogenic pressures.
Microbial interactions
This session covers interactions among aquatic microbes and between microbes and other organisms, including competition, cooperation, symbiosis, predation, and parasitism.
Phototrophic aquatic microbes
This session covers all topics related to phototrophic aquatic microbes, from autotrophic cyanobacteria and algae to photoheterotrophic microbes, including rhodopsin-bearing microbes and aerobic anoxygenic phototrophic bacteria.
New technologies, meta-omics and big data in microbial ecology
This session invites contributions on emerging technologies, methodological advances, meta-omics approaches, computational tools, and data-driven methods for studying aquatic microbial ecology.
Microbial diversity from an evolutionary perspective
This session explores the evolutionary processes shaping aquatic microbial diversity, including speciation, adaptation, diversification, and the evolution of microbial traits and genomes.
Microbial lifestyles and ecological strategies
This session explores diverse ecological strategies and lifestyles of aquatic microbes, including resource-use strategies (oligotrophy vs. copiotrophy), dormancy, particle association, and niche breadth (generalists vs. specialists), and their implications for microbial ecology.
Microbial eukaryotes in aquatic systems
This session welcomes abstracts on the evolution, diversity, ecology, and ecological roles of protists, fungi, and other aquatic microbial eukaryotes.
Aquatic viruses
This session welcomes abstracts on the diversity, ecology, evolution, and host-interactions of aquatic phages and eukaryotic viruses.
Incertae sedis
Your abstract doesn’t fit into any of the SAME19 topics? Don’t worry, the Incertae sedis session welcomes contributions on any topic related to aquatic microbial ecology.
